Siemens wins world recognition for motors manufactured in India

Siemens India has won the Super-Efficient Equipment Appliance Deployment (SEAD) Global Efficiency Medal for its 1LA2 series of low voltage IE3 induction motors, verified by testing of the 3.7kW and 11kW models. The SEAD initiative is an international collaboration of 16 countries and an initiative under the Clean Energy Ministerial, a global forum to share best practices and promote policies and programs that encourage and facilitate transition to a clean energy economy across the world.

The Swedish Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Communications hosted the awards ceremony in Zurich on October 7. International dignitaries, including the Ambassador for India to Switzerland and the Honorary Consul of Australia, presented the awards at the ceremony.

“Improving the energy efficiency of electric motors is critical for the continued development of India’s economy,” said the Ambassador for India in Switzerland, Mr. M.K. Lokesh, who presented the two Awards to Siemens Ltd. “The SEAD Awards help the market recognize the most efficient products currently available and encourage the development of new technologies.”

Siemens’ 1LA2 series of Low Voltage IE3 induction motors manufactured in India won in the IEC Induction Motor category for the India region as the most efficient motors, thereby providing the fastest return on investments to the users. The SEAD Global Efficiency Medal helps in identifying the world’s most efficient products and enhances buyers’ ability to differentiate and choose among products on the basis of their energy efficiency.

The induction motor is by far the most important type of electric motor found today, and has become the focus of regulators around the world. Medium-sized motors are of particular concern because they consume a lot of energy.

According to a 2011 International Energy Agency study, mid-sized motors ranging in size from 0.75 kW (1 hp) to 375 kW (500 hp) accounted for more than two-thirds of the electricity consumed by all motors worldwide in 2010. They consumed 4,800 terawatt-hours of electricity, more than the combined electricity consumption of Australia, India and the US. That is why even small improvements in efficiency of electric motor can have a huge impact on the economy and environment.

While historically SEAD has been awarding ‘Global Efficiency’ medals to various categories such as televisions, lightings, etc., it introduced the category of ‘Motors’ – IEC Induction Motors, NEMA Induction Motors, New Technology motors less than 75 Kw, and New Technology motors less than 100 Kw hp – only in 2014.

Siemens’ latest drives are of higher power density, compact frame size

The second generation of the Sinamics G120 from Siemens is a modular drive with a higher power density and space-saving frame size. The higher power density is attributable to the new PM240-2 power module. The re-engineered drive range is now available in three voltage versions for connection to 200 V, 400 V and 690 Vlines.

The second generation devices are even more resistant to line fluctuations, thanks also to an integrated DC link inductor. The IP21 degree of protection makes the drives drip-proof, allowing them to be mounted outside a control cabinet, even in a damp environment. Siemens offers seven frame sizes with powers ranging from 0.37 kW to 250 kW depending on the requirements.

The new Sinamics G120 generation enables drives to be mounted side-by-side without derating, reducing not only the space requirements but also the cost of control cabinet construction. In order to lower heat levels in the control cabinet, the Sinamics G120 features the innovative push-through cooling concept in addition to needs-based ventilation.

Furthermore, filtered and unfiltered devices have the same footprint. The new Siemens drives have optimized connections on the line and motor sides to simplify commissioning and maintenance work. Siemens also supplies the shield plates at no additional cost.

The user can combine the power unit with the appropriate control unit and other optional components such as operator panels to meet the requirements of the appli-cation. The control units have extended functions, and are characterized by precise, reliable vector control and basic positioning capabilities.

All the new Sinamics G120 drives also have a comprehensive, integrated safety concept ranging up to PLe/SIL3. Sinamics G120 is suitable for pumping, ventilating and compressing ap-plications, as well as moving and processing applications. The devices are designed to meet a diverse range of industrial and business requirements, such as those in general mechanical engineering and the automotive, textile, packaging and chemical industries.
