DenimsandJeans: Stitching Together Innovation, Culture and Commerce in the Global Denim Industry

At the bustling 7th edition of the DenimsandJeans India 2025 show in Bangalore, the spirit of collaboration, creativity, and innovation was palpable. This annual trade platform, founded by Mr. Sandeep Agarwal, has evolved into a globally respected hub that connects the denim value chain, from mill to market. What began as an idea rooted in industry passion has today grown into a series of international events that span continents and drive meaningful change in the denim ecosystem.

Mr. Sandeep Agarwal

In an exclusive conversation with The Textile Magazine, Mr. Agarwal shared insights into the show’s evolution, emerging trends, and the broader vision that continues to shape DenimsandJeans into a catalyst for innovation and sustainability.

A Show That Evolves with the Industry

What sets DenimsandJeans apart is its conscious effort to upgrade and evolve with each edition. “Every year, we try to raise the bar — whether in terms of presentation, knowledge-sharing, or trend forecasting,” Mr. Agarwal remarked. For the 2025 edition, the team partnered with WGSN’s official forecast for Autumn/Winter 2026–27, inviting exhibitors to interpret and present garments based on these insights. This resulted in a vibrant, competitive showcase of forward-thinking denim designs — a visual testament to India’s growing creative and technical strength in denim.

The overarching theme this year, “50 Shades of Denim,” was more than just a catchy title. It encapsulated the diverse and multifaceted journey of denim in India — from local tailoring traditions to becoming the second-largest producer of denim fabric and a leading consumer of jeans worldwide.

A Global Vision, Rooted in Passion

Mr. Agarwal’s denim journey began in 1993, and in 2007 he launched one of the world’s first denim-focused industry blogs — a move that helped build a global network of denim professionals. This digital foundation laid the path for the launch of the DenimsandJeans show in Bangladesh in 2014, a market that was rapidly ascending in the global denim supply chain.

“We chose markets that were gaining importance and needed a platform for both buyers and suppliers to connect and collaborate,” he explained. Since then, DenimsandJeans has successfully expanded to Vietnam, Japan, India, and most recently, Egypt, positioning itself as a global enabler of innovation, learning, and commerce in denim.

But Mr. Agarwal is quick to point out that the value of the show goes beyond business transactions. “It’s about the exchange of ideas — discussions on technology, sustainability, and design spark actions that may not have happened otherwise,” he said.

Decoding Denim Trends: Sustainability and Style

The DenimsandJeans 2025 edition spotlighted key shifts that are reshaping the global denim narrative:

  • Sustainability continues to be the single most defining trend in the industry. What started as niche advocacy more than a decade ago is now a tangible priority. “Brands are moving from conversations to action,” Mr. Agarwal observed, underscoring how circularity, reduced water use, and sustainable finishing technologies are gaining traction.
  • Style Evolution is another area where the market has witnessed visible shifts. From super-stretch skinny fits, the industry has embraced rigid, flare, and wide-leg silhouettes, which demand different fabric constructions and finishes. This transformation is altering supply chain dynamics and raw material choices, forcing mills and brands to adapt quickly.

India’s Role in the Global Denim Supply Chain

India, once primarily a denim fabric manufacturing hub, is now evolving into a vibrant consumer and production base. With over 600 million jeans sold annually, there is enormous potential for both domestic consumption and export growth.

However, as Mr. Agarwal candidly noted, India’s garmenting infrastructure still lags behind its fabric manufacturing capacity. “This remains a bottleneck, but once addressed, the potential for India to become a dominant force in global denim exports is very real,” he said.

Encouragingly, DenimsandJeans has begun sponsoring international buyer participation, aiming to bridge the gap between Indian manufacturers and global markets.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Horizons

So what does the future hold for DenimsandJeans?

With shows now well-established in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and North Africa, the focus in the next five years is on consolidation and intelligent expansion. Mr. Agarwal revealed that the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic halted plans temporarily, especially in Japan. “We had to cancel our debut edition there just 15 days before the show due to the outbreak,” he recalled. However, the platform has since resumed with full force and is now regaining momentum across regions.

While no new geographies are confirmed at the moment, the DenimsandJeans team is watching the global landscape closely to determine the next strategic moves.

Conclusion: A Platform with Purpose

DenimsandJeans is more than a trade show — it is a platform of possibilities, one that brings together designers, brands, manufacturers, technologists, and sustainability champions under one roof. It is a space where trends are predicted, ideas are exchanged, and the future of denim is shaped.

As India continues to emerge as a denim powerhouse, platforms like DenimsandJeans play a vital role in not just showcasing what the country can offer, but in inspiring what it can become.
