Powering Progress: LMW Drives Eri Silk Spinning Expansion in North-East India

Eri silk, often celebrated as “peace silk” or “Ahimsa silk,” represents one of India’s most eco-conscious and culturally rooted textile traditions. Its production, which allows the silkworm to emerge from the cocoon unharmed, makes it a truly sustainable and ethical fiber. Historically spun on handlooms, Eri silk is now undergoing a remarkable transformation—powered by modern technology and regional collaboration in North-East India.

At the heart of this transformation, LMW’s Smart Series Spinning Machinery are helping to scale up Eri silk yarn production across the region.

In a significant step towards strengthening the Eri silk infrastructure, the following pioneering organizations in the North-East have adopted LMW’s Smart Series Machinery:

•          Rudrasagar Silk Ltd

•          Director of Sericulture, Bodoland Territorial Council, Kokrajhar, Assam

•          North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC)

The Role of LMW

NEHHDC is a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. It has been at the forefront of promoting traditional crafts and textiles in the region. The Eri Silk Spinning Plant at Kharuajan, established with LMW’s Smart Machinery, marks a significant step in scaling traditional silk production with modern infrastructure.

“The project addresses the challenges in cocoon rearing and the scarcity of modern machinery to meet the increasing demand for Eri yarn,” said Mr. Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR)

This machinery upgrade not only ensures better yarn consistency and output but also helps maintain high quality while reducing energy consumption and operational costs.
