Precision, Performance and Power Savings: Sowmiya Mills’ Experience with Tesco Fans

Nestled in Annur, on the outskirts of Coimbatore, Sowmiya Mills has carved out a strong reputation in the textile sector for its robust manufacturing infrastructure and unwavering focus on quality. A walk through the mill’s two sprawling units reveals state-of-the-art machinery at every turn, each carefully selected to ensure optimal performance.

A commitment to quality

“For us, quality is of paramount importance,” says Mr.K.S. Thirumeni, General Manager of Sowmiya Mills. “And to deliver quality, you need the latest and most reliable machinery. We keep a constant watch on technological advancements and make it a point to upgrade regularly. This has been a cornerstone of our success since our founding in 1994.”

This philosophy was very much in play when the mill evaluated new ventilation systems for its spinning facility. Recalling the process, Mr. Thirumeni says, “When we were searching for power saving fans, Mr.Prabhu Damodharan from Indian Texpreneurs Federation (ITF) recommended Tesco’s fans, based on feedback that he had received from other mills.” “Our Executive Director, a textile engineering graduate who has always been interested in innovative, energy saving solutions, asked us to take a closer look at Tesco’s fans,” he adds.

A test that delivered results

That closer look began with a demo fan installed on-site. “We monitored its performance for 10 days,” he continues. “The results were beyond promising. We conducted a detailed before-and-after study and found that the Tesco fan delivered nearly 18% power savings compared to other models we had used. That kind of efficiency is hard to ignore.”

Big impact; Proven savings

Impressed, the mill placed an order for 21 Tesco fans, which were installed across both units. The fans have now been running for over a year and have brought down the mill’s power consumption by an impressive 1666 units per day—a savings of ₹10,000 per day, or ₹36 lakhs annually. “Overall, we’ve seen a 2% reduction in total power consumption across our units,” says Mr. Thirumeni.

Solid performance

But the benefits didn’t stop at energy savings. “We monitor key performance metrics like suction, RH (relative humidity), CFM (cubic feet per minute), and power units consumed,” says Mr. Selva Kumar, the mill’s Electrical Engineer. “Tesco’s fans have performed strongly across all these parameters. The suction at the slit ends remains consistently optimal, contributing to improved overall efficiency.” Beyond the technology itself, Sowmiya Mills has also been impressed with Tesco’s customer service and long-term commitment. “We’ve had no issues so far,” Mr. Thirumeni shares. “Plus, their engineers visit our site regularly to ensure everything is running smoothly. That kind of follow-through is rare.” The fans have also proved to be a sound investment, with a return on investment (ROI) in just four months.

Looking ahead with confidence

Looking ahead, Sowmiya Mills is gearing up for further modernization. “We’re planning upgrades in 1824 spindles, with the addition of 14 new ring frames,” says Mr. Thirumeni. “We’re also evaluating our carding filter systems. Based on the performance so far, we’ll definitely consider Tesco’s fans for these expansions.” The mill is also keeping an eye on Tesco’s upcoming innovations. “We hear they’re launching a waste collection system soon. Given our positive experience, we’ll certainly evaluate it when the time comes.”

At Sowmiya Mills, every machinery decision is made with care—and when it comes to balancing performance, power savings, and reliability, Tesco Engineering Corporation has proven to be the right choice.
