JCPenney bath towels awarded MADE IN GREEN label

JCPenney is the first retailer in the US to bring the MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX traceable textile label to its customers. Available in JCPenney stores now, the JCPenney Home Quick-Dri bath towel, which has been awarded this prestigious label, assures customers that the product is tested for harmful substances and made in environmentally-friendly facilities. These high quality, 100 per cent cotton towels, designed to dry faster to save customers time and money, are highly absorbent.

“JCPenney has a strong legacy of responsible corporate citizenship by advancing social, ethical and environmental standards across our operations and supply chain,” said Grant Shriver, Vice President and Divisional Merchandise Manager for home at JCPenney. “The MADE IN GREEN label gives our customers new levels of transparency and visibility into the various stages of production, as well as the countries in which the textile was manufactured. This towel is a smart choice for customers who support a more sustainable environment and a better tomorrow.”

The MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX label is traceable, meaning that JCPenney customers can confirm the certification for themselves through a unique ID code. They can enter that ID code on www.MadeInGreen.com or scan the label’s QR code with their smart phones. These links will authenticate the MADE IN GREEN label quickly and easily, an important benefit for busy shoppers, and provide visibility into every component of the production stream.

“We are excited to see the MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX labels at JCPenney,” said George Dieners, OEKO-TEX General Secretary. “Increasing global textile sustainability requires action from the entire supply chain, especially major US retailers like JCPenney. The JCPenney Home Quick-Dri bath towels are a wonderful way to make textile sustainability tangible for consumers and to visibly reinforce JCPenney’s commitment to responsible business practices.”

Products carrying the MADE IN GREEN by OEKO-TEX label are tested for harmful substances by an independent, third-party laboratory. To ensure the products are produced in environmentally friendly facilities, production facilities are extensively evaluated to confirm they are using the best available processing technologies that protect the environment and make for efficient resource management.

Finally, the facilities in which MADE IN GREEN labeled products are manufactured must be certified for their fair working conditions. This includes adequate measures to ensure occupational health and safety as well as social aspects such as the exclusion of child labor or discrimination.
