Technology and Innovation will help India lead in Spinning & Textiles

Being in the spinning industry for close to five decades, we have closely observed change in markets and consumer demand over time. While for the initial three decades our focus was on the Indian domestic market, the last two decades saw a rise in global opportunities, especially in South East Asia, the Middle East and East Europe.

One significant difference we find in the new emerging markets is the use of latest and advanced technologies in machines, accessories and production process, which impacts the quality of the yarn produced. The new technologies also reduce human dependencies and increase the production volume making the price globally competitive. Back in India, most mills still use technologies of the past with minor, time to time upgradations.

“Roti, Kapda, Makaan” – will always remain the basic necessities of human life on earth. Demand for good quality yarn will remain and grow. Being the largest producer of cotton, India should not doubt its leadership. However, leadership comes with responsibilities.

Technology and innovation are impacting every industry. It does so, in every 2 to 3 decades. It is crucial to stay with the times or ahead of it. Newer technologies bring in artificial intelligence into production, reducing time lag, bringing accuracy and improving production levels. Smart technologies have brought all this and more into a dashboard in your hand- i.e., your smartphone device.

One such innovation I would like to mention is grown at our home – the Jumac Smart Cans and the Smart Can App. Unveiled at ITMA Barcelona 2019, Jumac has introduced Smart Can Technology, which allows the floor manager in the spinning mills, get easy access to the complete technical datasheet of our cans instantly on their phone. It saves a lot of operational time.

Technology brings us closer. The App also helps in faster access to customer care, connecting the operator directly with the company. We set a countdown to respond to each issue within a priority timeframe. Smart Can App allows a customer place orders directly from the App, as well as track order, from production to dispatch until the arrival at the port.

We have built a repository of high quality content on how to assemble our cans, maintain them, improve life, when to consider an upgrade and many more through a knowledge bank in our App. It also helps us keep our customers up to date with industry trends.

Though our App is just at a basic stage, we have started receiving a lot of appreciation from our clients, both in India and overseas markets.

I feel spinning mills in India must adapt to new technologies and embrace them. The resistance to change needs to go. Not just new technologies, but bringing in processes and systems is also critical. It is also important to move from being a labour-intensive industry to a value-added, people –driven one.

At Jumac, we have reduced most human labour work by automating any such process that can be done by a machine. However, we ensured not a single layoff. Each staff has been trained, groomed and mapped to different areas of the floor for supervision. We wish the fraternity best wishes and success in the years ahead.
