Toray develops polyester-nylon fibre with almost 93% recycled content

New ARTIROSA® CX textile combines high recycled-material content with premium aesthetics and functional performance, targeting outerwear and urban outdoor applications from Autumn/Winter 2027.

Toray Industries, Inc. has developed a polyester-nylon composite fibre containing at least 93% recycled material by mass, marking a significant step towards incorporating higher levels of recycled raw materials into sophisticated textile products. The development builds on the company’s expertise in polymer design and composite spinning, drawing on technologies cultivated through its recycled fibre brand.

The 93% recycled-content figure applies to the newly developed raw yarn, calculated against its total weight. It does not represent the recycled content of the finished fabric or garment, which will vary according to the material composition.

Overcoming Challenges in Composite Fibre Development

Composite fibres are valued for their ability to deliver enhanced functionality, sophisticated textures and distinctive visual effects. However, incorporating different polymers into a single fibre presents challenges when manufacturers seek to maximise recycled-material content while maintaining consistent quality.

Toray has addressed this challenge through its proprietary polymer design and composite spinning technologies, incorporating recycled raw materials into both the polyester and nylon components of the newly developed fibre.

The company plans to verify the technology’s viability for mass production while continuing research to increase the recycled-material content of composite fibres. The development responds to growing interest within the fashion industry in recycled materials, particularly as brands seek to combine sustainability objectives with the quality and performance expectations of premium products.

For high-end and luxury applications, recycled content alone is not sufficient. Fabrics must also deliver the required appearance, tailoring characteristics, drape, texture and durability.

ARTIROSA® CX Combines Sustainability with Sophisticated Design

To translate the new fibre technology into a market-ready textile, Toray has developed ARTIROSA® CX, a fabric concept that combines its composite-spinning expertise with the weaving, knitting, dyeing and finishing capabilities of Japan’s textile-producing regions.

The fabric features a dense, finely textured surface and a crisp, sophisticated feel. Its design moves beyond the conventional appearance often associated with functional textiles, offering a more refined aesthetic suited to contemporary urban fashion.

Material selection, fabric construction and post-processing can be adapted to deliver practical performance characteristics, including waterproofing, durable water repellency and wind resistance. The precise properties will depend on the material composition, design and processing methods used.

Toray has also indicated that the water-repellent agents used for ARTIROSA® CX are not intentionally formulated with substances classified as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The company aims to combine functional performance with material choices aligned with evolving environmental considerations.

The development reflects an approach in which sustainability and aesthetics are addressed together, rather than treating recycled content as a standalone product attribute.

Targeting Premium Apparel Markets

Toray plans to market ARTIROSA® CX for a range of applications, including men’s and women’s outerwear, urban outdoor clothing and premium casual wear. Further textile development will explore nylon blends, combinations with natural fibres and additional post-processing techniques to expand the range of textures and functional properties.

The company intends to draw on Japan’s textile craftsmanship and processing expertise to develop materials that meet the evolving requirements of fashion brands and consumers.

ARTIROSA® CX is scheduled for launch in the Autumn/Winter 2027 season, with Toray targeting initial-year sales of 200,000 metres.

Advancing Recycled Materials for High-Value Textiles

The development highlights the technical challenge of moving recycled materials into more demanding textile applications, where consistent quality, refined aesthetics and functional performance are essential.

By incorporating recycled raw materials into both polyester and nylon components, Toray is seeking to extend the potential of composite fibres beyond conventional applications. The company’s next steps will focus on validating mass-production feasibility and further increasing recycled-material content.

With ARTIROSA® CX, Toray aims to demonstrate how advanced fibre engineering and specialised textile processing can help bridge the gap between recycled-material innovation and the expectations of premium apparel markets.
