True Tone Ink: Creating a niche with herbal dyeing

Through reviving a lost ancient practice, True Tone Ink is just at the beginning of a success curve and is undoubtedly on a path to revolutionise the dyeing process with its herbal technology, bringing to this world a lost gift.

Arun Baid, CEO of True Tone Ink (P) Limited

The undying spirit of Arun Baid, CEO of True Tone Ink (P) Limited is the next step in the textile industry when it comes to clean and natural ways of cloth dyeing. True Tone Ink is an industrial expert on herbal dyes, reviving ancient history and practicing it in modern times. This industry brings to the world beautiful dyes which are made entirely by natural elements such as leaves, flowers, roots, seeds and more. This young company which started 2-3 years ago has caught the global eye and has created an everlasting impact around the world that will leave a legacy for years to come.

The experience of Arun Baid goes back 18-20 years starting with natural dying in textiles. Additionally, Baid also was in the business of recycling chemical waste for 15 years. A veteran in the field of cloth dyeing, he wanted to find the right technology to create a process which allowed his company to dye clothes through a much natural process instead of using chemicals, thus reviving the lost art of herbal dyeing technology, a game-changer in the cloth dyeing sphere, hence explaining the genesis of True Tone Ink.

Currently, the technology is US and India- patented and is in the name of Arun Baid, who is keen on sharing the technology with other manufacturers to create a clean and natural way of dyeing.

Creating a Global Impact

The company has been undertaking natural dying for major global and other organic brands such as Levis, H and M, etc. The aim of True Tone Ink is to make herbal dying a mass scale production, consequently creating an ecological brand and an ecological way of processing in the textile world. Herbal dyeing includes the use of herbs from non-edible waste sources that create an authentic natural dye, eliminating the use of any chemicals.

The dyes are made from herbs that have their own medicinal properties, which is an added benefit. True Tone Ink also practices the process creating dry dyes – dyes that are made without the use of water, which makes it more energy-efficient and does not compromise in the solidarity of the colours in any manner. The young dyeing company through natural dyeing processes reduces TDS (total dissolved solids) by a whopping 91.4%, COD (chemical oxygen demand) by 98.1% and BOD (biological oxygen demand) by 98.35%. Furthermore, the use of alkalinity water, the purest water, is reduced by 60%, therefore saving water.

Furthermore, the company is planning to expand and have its footprint in different segments, applying these dyes in different setups. Elaborating about the company and the innovative process it employs, Baid says, “Our strength is in our technology.”

Conserving the Environment

Natural dye compared to chemical dyeing is a huge difference relative to the environment as chemical dye uses at least 8,000-14,000 chemicals in the dying processes, thus harming the environment. True Tone Ink saves about 2,000 litres of water with its dry drying herbal technology as every chemically dyed shirt requires that amount, and if not treated right, can cause havoc in the natural environment. Additionally, the 2,000 litres of water that the company saves is pure drinking water as cloth dyeing requires the purest form of aqua, which brings additional brownie points to this environmentally aware company.

Facing the Pandemic

As regards the impact of the pandemic that hit the overall textile industry hard, True Tone Ink was affected substantially since it operates on a self-sustainable mode without relying on outside investors. However, after the initial stages of the pandemic had passed, things got better and the business turnout was 2-3 times more because of the general awareness the virus awoke in every individual, surprising the company. “A lot of awareness has come into play, subconsciously, on account of the corona virus,” Baid states.

Awareness is the Key

Because of the company’s pure intentions and dedication to creating a chemical-free environment in the cloth dyeing sphere, True Tone Ink is on a path to achieving greater heights, and going beyond. “We have been nominated by H and M worldwide for dyes,” Baid informs. This does not come as a surprise though it is a major achievement for a company that began just 2-3 years ago. When asked about a substitute and other players in their field, Baid replies, “There’s no other option.”

He works and collaborates with artists, teaching them about the process of natural dyeing and herbal dyeing and has established a centre to educate young and innovative minds, called Colour Ashram Foundation, located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. As to his vision for the next five years, Baid says that in two years it should be considerably in the picture of the textile scenario. “I see it as an important part of the textile processes and acceptability,” he says.
