Tirupur-based textile major strengthens its position in global apparel manufacturing through vertical integration, technology investments and a strong commitment to workforce welfare
From a modest beginning with just six sewing machines and an investment of ₹2 lakh in 1993, K.M. Knitwear has evolved into one of Tirupur’s prominent vertically integrated textile groups. Today, the company operates across the textile value chain, employs nearly 7,000 people, and generates group revenues of around ₹1,400 crore.

Speaking to The Textile Magazine, Mr. K.M. Subramaniam, Founder of K.M. Knitwear and a respected industry leader in Tirupur, reflected on the company’s growth journey, its focus on manufacturing excellence, and the role of the next generation in driving future expansion.
From Engineering Graduate to Textile Entrepreneur
Hailing from Kuduvai near Tirupur, Subramaniam became the first graduate in his family after completing his engineering studies in Coimbatore. At a time when Tirupur’s export sector was witnessing rapid growth, he chose to pursue opportunities in knitwear manufacturing rather than continue in traditional family occupations.
After gaining industry experience, he established K.M. Knitwear in 1993. Within three years, the company entered the export business and began building a strong presence in international markets.

“Tirupur was growing rapidly during the early 1990s. I saw tremendous opportunity in exports and decided to build a business that could compete globally,” says Subramaniam.
A Fully Integrated Manufacturing Ecosystem
Over the years, K.M. Knitwear has invested extensively in backward integration, creating a comprehensive manufacturing infrastructure that includes spinning, knitting, processing, printing and garmenting operations.
The company today operates 12 manufacturing units and has established itself as one of the largest textile processing players in Tirupur.

Particularly noteworthy is its expertise in polyester and man-made fibre processing, an area that is becoming increasingly important as global demand shifts towards performance and functional apparel.
“Whatever is required in the knitwear value chain, we have built the capability within our group. This integration helps us maintain quality, improve efficiency and serve customers better,” explains Subramaniam.
Workforce Welfare as a Core Business Philosophy
One of the distinguishing features of K.M. Knitwear is its strong focus on employee welfare. Nearly 70 percent of its workforce comprises women employees, reflecting the company’s commitment to inclusive employment generation.

The company recruits workers from multiple states across India and provides extensive residential and welfare facilities. Modern accommodation, quality food services, recreational amenities and a safe working environment have helped create a stable and productive workforce.
According to Subramaniam, employee well-being remains central to the company’s long-term success.
“If workers are happy, they will contribute to the growth of the company. We believe in sharing success with our employees and creating a positive work environment,” he says.
Next-Generation Leadership Driving Transformation
As the company enters a new phase of growth, the next generation is playing an increasingly important role in business operations.

His sons, Vishnu Prabhu and Karthik Prabhu, have joined the organisation and are leading initiatives focused on modernization, productivity enhancement and technology adoption.
Their efforts include implementing lean manufacturing systems, improving operational efficiency and benchmarking performance against global best practices.
Embracing Automation and Industry 4.0
Like many forward-looking textile manufacturers, K.M. Knitwear sees automation as a key enabler of future competitiveness.
The company continues to invest in advanced sewing technologies, digital manufacturing systems, production monitoring tools and automation solutions designed to improve productivity and reduce manufacturing costs.

Subramaniam believes that Indian apparel manufacturers must accelerate technology adoption to remain globally competitive.
“Automation, AI-driven manufacturing systems and advanced production technologies will play a major role in shaping the future of our industry,” he notes.
Expanding Horizons While Staying Focused on Exports
While exports continue to remain the primary growth driver, the group has also explored strategic diversification opportunities. Investments in healthcare and participation in domestic apparel ventures reflect a balanced approach towards long-term business sustainability.
However, K.M. Knitwear remains firmly committed to strengthening its position in global apparel exports.
The company serves customers across Europe, Scandinavia, Africa and several other international markets, while continuously expanding its capabilities to meet evolving buyer requirements.
Looking Ahead
With strong manufacturing infrastructure, an experienced workforce, next-generation leadership and a clear focus on technology, K.M. Knitwear is positioning itself for the next phase of growth.
As global brands increasingly seek reliable, compliant and vertically integrated sourcing partners, the company is well placed to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the international apparel market.
For Subramaniam, the objective remains clear: to build a globally respected textile enterprise while continuing to serve as a role model for Tirupur’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
“We want to grow responsibly, create opportunities for people and continue contributing to the success of Tirupur’s textile industry,” he concludes.
